Since then I reside in the Netherlands, where I learned to think, to express my thoughts and where I started to make artworks. But I still kept travelling, perhaps out of need to find what I lacked, because my way of living forced me to stay in only one cultural surrounding. Or to be more precise, travelling became an attempt to overcome boundaries set by one culture or the other.
One could say that as my background as my work consists of 3 layers. The first layer goes back to an upbringing in very rural surroundings without, for example the use of electricity and paved roads. Then the life in a cityscape with all culture events, people and almost unlimited possibilities. On top of that I distinguish a third layer; the one of a contemporary nomad. And this is the form that manifests itself more and more in my works and way of working.
I see the artist as a spectator and a observer of life. The lives in which he is coincidentally present involve him, because of this presence, in the situation without his necessary participation. The stress is on the movement, on the travelling as such. The presence (only instantaneous) is already sufficient ‘comment’ on the situation and might be also the purest form of commenting it.

The installation part of the exhibition emphasizes a general notice of moving, where pictures with different roads from all over the world are linked as one stream of consciousness.
These strings will find a reflection in a video piece on a monitor which is centrally placed on car tyres. This video piece “driving – walking – standing” relates to a working period in South Africa, beginning 2002.
The car tyre has to be seen as a symbol for travelling and moving. These days it is the most important contact of a human while travelling, it is his contact with the earth underneath during this process.
The slippers at the entrance are cut out from old tyres. They invite the visitor to put them on and journey through the exhibition.

Ulric Roldanus

WORKS

‘on the road’
installation
photographies of the roads shot while travelling over the world

‘driving-walking-standing’
Durban South Africa, 2002
videofilm, 3 min. looped

en ROUtE I
photo on canvas, 38×56 cm, Ougadougou, 2003
image

en ROUtE II
photo on canvas, 38×56 cm, Ougadougou, 2003
image

Until the age of 11 I lived in Cameroon, Africa and that was the place where I learned about colours, smells and forms.
