Lise Harlev

In the framework of the G-MK research and residency program, Danish artist based in Berlin, Lise Harlev, was invited on a two-weeks research. During that time Harlev explored Zagreb as a historical site, investigating how the traces of different  historical and political events influenced her experience of the city today. Harlev was interested in the moment when the city \’becomes alive\’ with history, but also in the difficulties of actually understanding history today and relating to its events. An exhibition of Harlev’s new work, partly as the result of her reseacrh in Zagreb, will be opened on April 28th 2011.

rnHarlev’s work has long dealt with the formation of identity and the factors that define our feeling of identity, be it nationality, intimate relationships or political views. Though her work has taken on such different forms as silkscreen prints, enamel signs, stained glass and photography, it has always drawn aesthetically on graphic design and public information signage. She is interested in the often difficult relationship between personal identity and the public realm and in how a subjective content is expressed with an aesthetic designed for the public.
