This public presentation marks the final phase of Leonardo Losciale’s residency within Open Studio 2025 at GMK. From 19 September to 14 October 2025, the artist has used 10ka as a temporary studio and site of research. Visitors are invited to step into the work-in-progress, explore materials and concepts, and talk with the artist.

Come to 10ka on October 14 at 7 PM — admission is free.

About Aristophanes’ Dilemma

Losciale maps the particularities of 10ka’s container-like architecture beneath a massive building on Šubićeva Street. Spatial contradictions (visibility/hiddenness, porosity/closure) ground an inquiry into new perceptual models, the fragility of materiality, and the potential of ephemeral forms.

The starting point is smoke—an element whose evanescence resonates with Aristophanes’ Clouds, exposing the shifting nature of rhetoric. The artist connects this to today’s “clouds”—digital archives whose fragmentation and control become metaphors for contemporary stratifications of identity. Through mirrors, ventilation elements, and found materials, the project examines space as a political device, a site of memory and transformation.

About Open Studio

The tenth edition of Open Studio continues GMK’s distinctive residencies, fostering encounters between artists and audiences and offering the key resource of space, free from production pressure and market expectations. The gallery turns into a studio on a monthly basis, with technical, production, and curatorial support available. Visitors are invited to witness experiments, comments, and the dilemmas of making.

In 2024, residents included Dora Fodor & Iva Peručić (We are not made of sugar) and Željko Beljan (research into the Borovo factory archive and the pioneering women’s football team from 1938). Continuing this line, Leonardo Loscialepresents his research to the public on Tuesday, 14 October 2025 at 7 PM.

Artist Bio

Leonardo Losciale (1985, Italy) is a visual artist and musician. He graduated in Sculpture from the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb in 2024. His practice spans sculpture, spatial installations, performative objects, video, and experimental sound. Thematically, he explores potential (dynamis), the state of exception, relational aesthetics, and the limits of form, drawing on Giorgio Agamben, Jacques Lacan, Nicolas Bourriaud, and Carl Schmitt.

He has exhibited widely in Croatia (Salon mladih, Croatian Sculpture Triennial, SC Gallery, Šira Gallery, Garaža Kamba, Augustinčić Gallery, Diocletian’s Cellars in Split), and participated in international sculpture schools in Vrsar and Brtonigla, as well as workshops on collective practices in Graz, Ljubljana, Trieste, and Zagreb. In parallel, he is a timpanist with the Zagreb Philharmonic and an award-winning soloist. His work synthesizes sound, body, space, and theory—where sculpture becomes an instrument and void a material of articulation. He lives and works in Zagreb.
