This reading group is part of the One Step Forward, Two Steps Back exhibition by artist Andrea Knezović, which questions subtle, everyday tactics of resistance within the strict regime of cognitive capitalism. These strategies manifest through rest, imagination, collective well-being, and selfless sharing of knowledge. This gathering aims to provide a platform for cultural workers (or those aspiring to become such) to critically engage with texts exploring anti-capitalist theories, especially those addressing the neologisms emerging from new challenges we face today – particularly regarding immaterial labor and cognitive capitalism.
How can the act of naming and defining issues or concepts serve as a strategy of resistance? Do new words arise from new problems? As a starting point, we will read the terms from The Glossary of Cognitive Activism (For A Not So Distant Future) by Warren Neidich.
The workshop involves collective reading and discussion focused on definitions related to cognitive capitalism, with particular emphasis on mapping them within the field of cultural labor. After the reading, participants will collectively map key terms and ideas, building a shared vocabulary for resisting capitalist structures in their work. At a time when the capitalist imperative of productivity dictates that every gathering must result in a final product, this workshop is a relaxed meeting space where we hope for horizontal exchange and shared learning, with its final product—like cultural labor—remaining invisible.
The workshop is intended for those working in culture, especially young people and students, but it is open to anyone interested. After registering via info@g-mk.hr, participants will receive the literature that will be covered during the workshop. Pre-reading is encouraged, but not mandatory.
