In the courtyard of my granny’s home in Branjina, close to the main gate, next to the rusty wired fence enfolded by grass and weed, there stood an old, slender well covered with moss. There was no wooden roof over it, and the water would be taken out with a tin basket that had a long rope tied to its handle. The well stood on a brick base, and the free end of the rope hang loose over the wired fence. With the help of the rope, the bucket would be cast into the well. First, there was a thump against the surface of the water, then a sprinkle and then the bucket would slowly turn in the water before it would fill completely. The arms would feel the tension and start to drag the bucket out, as the water would spill over the moss bumping into the slippery green walls of the well. On the inside edge of the opening, situated between the bricks, there was a bush of wild roses that were continuously wet. When the bucket or a human hand touched them, there were white flowers and green pointed leaves moving over the dark water mirror. In summer we would often take out of the well buckets full of water which surface was covered by petals of wild roses.
